Fall in Love with Rovinj

Fall in Love with Rovinj

Rovinj is one of the most popular and most visited towns on the Istrian coast, thanks to its very photogenic scenery and interesting narrow colourful streets in the historic part of town.

The old town, in its original form was an island, but it was connected to the mainland in 1763. Today, Rovinj is picturesquely located on a small peninsula with the old town stretching high up on the hill. Taking a stroll through the cobble streets of the old town, you can explore the infinite cafes, restaurants, boutiques and art galleries. Grisia Street, often referred to as the “artist street”, is especially known for its artsy expositions of paintings and hand-made jewellery, souvenirs and ceramics. Most of these cobble streets would lead you to the top of the hill, where the Church of Saint Euphemia is situated, overlooking the town and giving you a breathtaking view on the open sea and neighbouring islands and islets. On the way, you will discover all kinds of interesting attractions, charming little squares and the architectural structures of the traditional houses: narrow and tall with its characteristic chimneys and vibrant colours.

A must-see in Rovinj is its romantic fishing harbour, surrounding the town center, presenting the typical fishing boat batana. Once a week you can also partake in the Fisherman’s Evening: eat typical fish dishes and observe the locals weaving fishing nets or actually making or repairing a wood batana.

You can sit in one of the many bars and restaurant and enjoy in a nice cold drink in the hot summer sun while enjoying in the fantastic view. Not to miss is also the main square, Trg Maršala Tita, with its impressive clock tower, originally built in the 12th century. Opposite to it is the Balbi’s Arch, one of the seven original city gates into the old town of Rovinj. Both of these monuments display Venetian trademarks, such as the winged St. Mark’s lion, reminding us of the history of the town.

The town’s green market and fish market offer an array of fresh local products each morning so be sure to stop by!

You also shouldn’t miss the visit to the Rovinj Heritage Museum, which gathers a valuable collection of modern art, archaeological findings, books and documents, as well as the Franciscan Monastery which houses many artistic artefacts from the period 15th - 20th century, such as important theological books and baroque paintings. If you are interested to see the marine life of the Adriatic Sea, don’t miss the Rovinj Aquarium, situated inside the building of Ruđer Bošković Institute, which is actually the Center for Marine Research and is home to hundreds of species of marine organisms with a century old tradition.

Finally, you can’t visit a town like Rovinj without taking the time to stop at one of the amazing beaches the town has to offer! If you are strolling through the old town, you can take a break from the summer heat and dip into the refreshing turquoise water at Baluota Beach, situated on the rocks underneath the town walls. This is really an amazing experience, especially if you catch the sunset! Alternatively, you could rent bikes and enjoy in the fantastic bike and walking trails by the seaside all through the Golden Cape (Zlatni rt – Punta Corrente), a natural park filled with amazing little beaches in a giant pine tree forest. The park offers a various range of activities: from running or cycling to rock climbing to water sports such as jet skis, diving or waterparks for the youngest guests!

In case you would like to get away from the town we suggest you visit the Red Island (Sv. Andrija) or the Island Katarina, which can both be reached by taxi boats from Rovinj’s shore. The islands host hotels and the beaches are perfect for families with children!

You can also book boat tours to the neighbouring islands or to the Lim Fjord, which is a great way to experience the sea and the sun on top of the waves of the clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea.
